Just a Walk in the Park: W+ B Ramble – January 22, 2022

by | Jan 25, 2022

We must thank Doris and Dorothea for their expert planning skills and local knowledge for organising our recent programme of weekend walks in the Basel Region. This month’s winter ramble was no exception; with fingers crossed for good weather, we made our way to Klein Basel for our latest outing.

The Canton of Basel-Stadt consists of just 3 communities, and after meeting at the City’s Exhibition Centre, we took a short tram and bus ride to the smallest – Bettingen. From there, we set off southwards on foot through forest and farmland. After little more than half an hour, and jiggling in and out of Germany, the trees suddenly gave out and we found ourselves at the lookout point atop the Hornfelsen cliff. At the same time the sun came out – brightening magnificent views of the Rhine from Pratteln in the east, downriver to the City, as well as the Jura hills, and beyond to the far west – we could even see the snow on the Vosges mountains.

Taking a slightly different route back through the forest, we ended up at the magnificent, sunlit Wenken Park, with its manicured English gardens, tastefully dotted with mature trees, particularly the imposing Cedar of Lebanon collection.

Despite many members and friends being long-time residents of the Basel area, few had visited this particular jewel on our doorstep.

And so, after an easy walk covering about 4.5 kms. conveniently taking us to lunchtime, we rewarded ourselves with a selection of light snacks and coffee in a reserved dining room at the Park’s Bistro Reithalle.
